The winner of the Lake Handicap is often a newcomer but this year’s series goes to someone who’s been with the club for many years. A close final race saw the top contenders finish within a few places of each other and George maintained his small lead to win the series with Paul Edwards second and Scott Smith just pipping Anna Critchley and Derek Rose for third.
The winner of the final race was newcomer Scott Barnes, way under his handicap time, followed by John Oldfield and Lisa Chan.
It’s been a strange old series, and the first without that essential ingredient of either having runners in front to chase or, worse still, the sound of a pack approaching from behind. But that lung-bursting feeling has still been the same and we’ve at least managed to make a series in the absence of other racing.
Let’s hope we’re back next year for the usual one-lap madness.
